About HBC CLEANING EQUIPMENT
The Hill Brush Company was established by brothers Fred and Bill Coward in 1922.
They were later joined by their respective sons David and Richard along with Bill's son-in-law, Brian Thomas. The company is now run by the third generation, David's son Philip, who is President of Hillbrush in the USA and is Managing Director of Hillbrush in the UK. Richard's son Peter is Vice President of Hillbrush USA, located in Baltimore, Maryland. The fourth generation, Philip’s son Charles, is Commercial Director of Hillbrush, overseeing Sales and Marketing operations.
The Company began in a small town in the UK and quickly grew. They originally specialised in dairy and agricultural brushes, but within a few years, many of the streets were being swept with brushes made by Hillbrush.
The Company is unique in having its own brush fibre-dressing department which began in 1926 and now processes all types of natural fibres from around the world, including Sierra Leone, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Mexico, China, Lesotho and Brazil. Having a fibre-dressing department means we are also able to offer special mixes, with natural fibres being mixed with synthetic materials.
Whilst the company's use of synthetic fiber has increased in recent years, this has mainly been in the manufacture of specialist brushes, such as those used in food production or catering establishments and in hygiene-sensitive areas, such as hospitals.
Automatic brush making machines were first introduced in the 1930s and in recent years, very sophisticated production equipment has been installed. This allows the Company to manufacture various types of brushes that were not previously made. As well as producing millions of brushes each year, Hillbrush produces a selection of other cleaning related products such as squeegees, shovels, buckets, lobby pans, signs, scoops, scrapers, paddles and many more.
The woodturning department was started in 1950 and manufactures specialist brush backs and products. The wooden brush backs are imported from Sri Lanka and across Europe and are transformed into brushes, packed by us and sent around the world.
Hillbrush is registered with the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) who ensure that timber felled and supplied from FSC accredited forests is replanted to ensure these forests are conserved for future generations. Hillbrush has an FSC chain of custody accreditation (TT/COC/1562) and is able to supply FSC timber products and brushes to order.
Hillbrush originally specialised in making wooden backed brushes and is still one of the largest manufacturers of wooden brushes in the world. Through innovation and product development, we have successfully introduced a range of plastic backed brushes for the food and beverage industries. Our expertise and specials division means we can produce brushware from molds supplied by our customers and have also developed leather backed brushes for the equestrian market.
In 2001 the company purchased Champion Brush Inc. based in Baltimore, the foremost manufacturer of horse grooming brushes in North America. This is now incorporated within Hillbrush USA which distributes hygiene products to the food industry, as well as manufacturing its own Equestrian brushes.
Hillbrush was one of the first in the industry to have its own website. Through constant web development, the latest and most interactive version of the Hillbrush website provides comprehensive marketing support, clear navigation and enables customers to buy on-line.
Our unrivalled experience and expertise has contributed to our prolonged success, with Hillbrush now producing almost three thousand different products, supplied to over 90 countries across the globe. We look forward to introducing more customers to our vast product range in the years ahead and are excited about future projects which will contribute to our long-standing history.
